Professional Guitar Setup & Service

Have your guitar setup and serviced!

Having your guitar setup professionally can be the difference between a "good" guitar and a "GREAT" guitar. When a guitar is setup correctly it will play easier and sound better. So how do you setup a guitar?

Trussrod, neck and action

Adjusting the neck properly will allow your strings to be in the optimum playing position, do adjust the neck we need to adjust the truss rod, this can be dangerous if you don't know how to adjust it correctly and can even lead to a damaged neck, this is why it is better to have it setup by a professional who knows how to do these adjustments without causing any permanent damge

We adjust the neck so that with have either a slight bow to avoid the strings buzzing against the fret or a dead straight neck if no buzzing occurs. Having your neck too straight might cause unwanted buzzing of the strings against the frets, and having too much of a bow will result in a higher action, making the guitar play very difficult

The action refers to the distance of the stirngs from the neck itself. Too high of an action will be uncomfortable to play, and too low will cause buzzing as mentioned before. Each guitar has a sweet spot depending on the type of strings you use and the style you play

Putting the strings on correctly

Of course you can change the strings on your guitar yourself, but have you ever noticed any of the following?

  • A "click" or "metal" sound when you tune your strings?

  • Do you have to retune the guitar often? Does it feel like your guitar keeps going out of tune?

  • Do you have to retune the guitar after bending the strings or strumming too hard?

  • Having to change strings frequently because they keep breaking?

If you have experienced any of the above mentioned then chances are that you are not stringing your guitar correctly. You need to have just enough of the string go around the tuner so that the string has enough integrity to hold its tuning, too little string and the string will break easily or "slip", too much string and the string will have an unbalanced tension over the neck. You also need to let the string keep hold of itself over the tuner, we do this by making using of an "over-under" technique, not only will this help the string keep its tuning under stress, but it will also help the string last longer than usual

We make use of a pencil or guitar grease to "lubricate" the nut on the guitar, this allows the strings to move more freely over the nut. Skipping this step can cause the horrible points mentioned above. What causes your strings to break more than anything else is an improperly set nut on the guitar. The string loses its integrity over the nut while you tune it causing it to develop a weak spot, you might think that the string breaks off at the back, but this is only where the string inevitably gives in, the bigger problem was most likely caused by the string "sticking" in the nut

Pickup adjustment & Intonation on an electric guitar

Setting your electric guitar's pickups to the correct height can influence the sound of the guitar quite dramatically.  Having your pickups set lower will result in a warmer and mellower tone, the pickups are not attracting the strings that much, having them closer will produce a slightly brighter sound, but beware, having them set too close to the strings may produce a "out-of-tune" sound. If the strings are too close to the strings they will attract them too much, resulting in the sound of a guitar that is slightly out of tune

The intonation of an electric guitar can be quite tricky to get right. The saddle of an electric guitar looks very different from that of an acoustic guitar. We adjust the height and length of the strings to make sure that the guitar is in tune all over the neck. Setting up the intonation requires some patience and know-how. Having the intonation setup correctly will allow you to have a guitar that sounds great even at extreme high pitches

Oiling and shining!

Fretboards tend to get very dirty very quickly, the oil on our fingers as well as some dust and dirt can cause the fretboard to not only look dirty, but also play "slower". If your fretboard is adding unnecessary friction while you are playing will result in a slight loss of speed. Keeping the fretboard clean and oiled will make it play smoother and feel more comfortable

Lastly let your guitar shine like the day you bought it! Regular polish and shine will keep your guitar in great condition and will make it feel better. Struggling to reach those difficult places with your cloth? Don't worry, I have the tools to get in there and make the guitar shine 110%
